What is Slow Orbit?
A call for submissions.
Slow Orbit is a call for writers and artists to select one of their pieces and write around it. Whether craft-oriented, process notes, biographical, or marginalia set in ambiguous relation to an original work, we are interested in providing a space for writers and artists to find themselves in lengthening and closing proximity to their pieces.
We ask that you submit one unpublished or previously published original work (writing, visual art, video—whatever we can accommodate on our site) and accompanying remarks of any length. If previously published, please ensure you cite where the work first appeared.
These remarks provide a space to locate an aesthetic object within the broader purview of your social commitments, material situation, and intellectual life. The insular view of art as totally self-enclosed aesthetic objects effaces how art is produced socially, by humans in community and obligation and inconvenience to each other. We want to provide a space that is in difference to the sterilized field of universal reception or the mystification of a complex, socially-informed artistic process into a posture of individual genius.
We want to ask: what distant constellations orient this work? What is clarified or fails to surface when you re-encounter your work? We value the generative, (re)orienting, and exploratory over remedial explanation. For an example, read Carl Phillips’s discussion of his ekphrastic poem “At the Reception,” although keep in mind we seek diverse modes of engagement.
Submission Guidelines
Send us two files:
- One
unpublished or previously published work of any form or genre that can be
reasonably accommodated on our website. If previously published, please cite
where it first appeared in the body of your email.

of any length that speak to/around your submitted work. We prefer Word
documents (.docx).
In the body of the email, please include a short bio and tell us a little bit about yourself.
