The etymology of “syzygy” is rooted in the Greek word “syzygos,” meaning yoked together (from syn-: with, together; zygon: yoke). In choosing a word to represent Heung Coalition’s writing workshop, we wanted one that could represent the idea of convening, of joining together. So many of our daily activities under late capitalism create artificial experiences of isolation; we resist that by finding joy and meaning through our community. The acts of art and creation are ones that can be embarked on together, and in fact necessitate collaboration in order to dismantle the old, oppressive orders. Art is never truly created in isolation. We are always building on all those who came before.
